HYDERABAD:  Even as the Telugu Desam is readying itself for the ensuing polls to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), the ruling TRS in Telangana on Friday administered another body blow to the yellow party.

Former minister and ex director of the CBI, K Vijayarama Rao, whose induction into the then N Chandrababu Naidu’s Cabinet in 1999 is considered by many as the genesis for ‘Telangana movement’, is learnt to have made up his mind to cross over to the ruling TRS from the TDP.

However, efforts made by Express to contact Rao to know his version did not yield results.

Though Rao has been out of the limelight and has not been taking part in TDP activities ever since the state’s bifurcation, since he had earlier represented Khairathabad Assembly constituency in the city, his possible defection to the pink party might further hit the morale of the TDP cadre in Hyderabad city.

Moreover, Vijayarama Rao’s possible defection to the TRS might remain an ‘unforgettable’ thing for the TDP leadership.

The reason is that Vijayarama Rao was inducted into the TDP in 1999 by the then chief minister of united AP and TDP boss Chandrababu Naidu as part of his efforts to woo ‘intellectuals’ into the party.

At that time, Naidu had given a call to intellectuals and neutrals, who have no political affiliations, to join the yellow party en masse. Rao was one such ‘neutral’ who joined the TDP at that time. Later, Rao had won the 1999 Assembly election from Khairathabad by defeating Congress strongman P Janardhan Reddy. After that, Rao was taken into Naidu’s cabinet.

Interestingly, Vijayarama Rao’s induction into the Naidu cabinet at that time  reportedly gave a shock to K.Chandrasekhar Rao who was transport minister in Naidu’s government till  October 10, 1999, the day Naidu was sworn in as CM of united AP for the second time.

Thus, KCR, who was a transport minister in  Naidu’s first TDP government between 1995 and 1999, could not find a berth in the cabinet during Naidu’s second stint as CM.

Even though KCR had won Siddipet Assembly seat by a huge margin in 1999, he was dropped in favour of Vijayarama Rao who belongs to the same Velama caste to which KCR belongs. The rest is history.
